Tri-Cities tourism is poised for a resurgence of summer travel
One lesser promoted piece of the city’s history that’s now in the works is the city’s African American history. Petersburg boasts one of the oldest African American churches in the country – First Baptist Church on Harrison Street – as well as one of the oldest Free Black settlements in Pocahontas Island. There are also numerous sites related to civil rights.
An effort to pull that history together for tourists and visitors is in the works, but does not yet have a centralized location. The former library inside the McKenney building on S. Sycamore Street has been marked to become the future site of Petersburg’s Black History Museum
